A Harvard professor, claims that coconut oil is “pure poison” and is “one of the worst foods you can eat.” In a lecture titled “Coconut Oil and Other Nutritional Errors” Michels claims that coconut oil is more unhealthy than lard because it is made almost exclusively of saturated fatty acids which can clog arteries. Coconut oil contains no fiber, no cholesterol, and only traces of vitamins and minerals and plants substances – too low to have a positive effect on health.
Last year, the American Heart Association updated its guidelines and suggest consumers be careful of consuming coconut because of its saturated fatty acids. There aren’t currently any scientific studies linking coconut oil to any significant health benefits.
Lightbulb Moment: Another finding that is not a shock to the medical community, she just happens to be one of the first to say it out loud and have media report on what she said. Trends can have adversaries as well as allies and sometimes they come in the form of science. There are reasons to promote coconut oil but health benefits are not among them.
